Prof.Dr. Adil Denizli has established Biochromatography Research Group in 1996. Groups researches are heavily on development of specific adsorbents for purification of biomolecules from their natural environments. In recent years, isolation of biomolecules (protein, enzyme, antibody, nucleic acid, hormone etc.) from biological media has becoming an important issue in biotechnology, biochemistry, pharmacy and medical fields. Affinity technique is the foremost because of its high selectivity within the separation techniques. Studies carried out with the leadership of Dr. Denizli, especially on dye ligands, are rapidly accepted in literature. In these studies, Dr. Denizli and his group have developed monosize microspheres, macrospheres, membranes and magnetic carriers and these carriers were modified to make them available protein purification, removal of toxic substance such as bilirubin, aluminum, iron and cadmium ions from human plasma. In this context, he succeeded in removal of bilirubin from hyperbilirubinemic human plasma with dye-affinity adsorbents and that was the first application in literature. In the last three years, Dr. Denizli and his groups leadership has underlined in all publications on this topic.
Dr. Denizli has investigated the usability of the polymeric sorbents developed by him in different hemoperfusion applications. For this aim, he prepared Protein A, DNA and heparin immobilized polymeric adsorbents. Protein A immobilized adsorbents were used for removal of pathogenic antibodies from patients plasma in some immunologic diseases and cancer treatments. DNA immobilized polymeric carriers are developed for the removal of pathogenic antibodies against own DNA, which are raised by an unknown reason in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) disease. In this content, magnetic polymeric carriers were prepared and successfully used first time in literature for removal of pathogenic antibodies from SLE patients plasma in magnetically stabilized fluidized bed. Heparin and anti-LDL antibody immobilized polymeric carriers were used for removal of low density lipoproteins (LDL) which is the leading cause of coronary heart diseases with its accumulation on blood vessel walls. In this content, Dr. Denizli and his team have prepared reactive amino acid based co-monomers and they showed significantly improved biocompatibility of these carriers. These studies have been published in international journals and taken a great attention.
Currently, 14 PhD and 7 MSc students are working in the group. 35 MSc, 8 PhD theses and 1 post doctoral study have finished up to now. Over 250 scientific publications have produced by the group and 40 international presentations have been performed.
